Your laptop or netbook can either directly from the mains or from the charge in your battery pack. Most people will use a combination of the two, plugging in their laptop whenever possible, but using it unplugged when there is no socket or they need to pass the laptop around or something like that.

At home, it is easiest to plug your laptop into the mains using the charger. In this way, you can run your laptop indefinitely, so this is the most convenient in that respect. However, you do have to remain within a certain distance of the power socket, which is limiting, no matter how long your charger cable.

If you have your laptop plugged in with the battery in place, you will ultimately see the battery’s performance deteriorate over time. Battery capacity is reduced when you run your laptop off mains electricity with it still in place as it is subjected to what is known as a ‘trickle charge’.

If a current is constantly running through a battery, the cells are gradually broken down. You might start off with a couple of hours’ worth of usage when you first get your laptop, but after a prolonged period of use, you may find that battery life becomes just half an hour or so or even less.

Running your laptop from your battery only can also have drawbacks. Under normal usage a decent HP Laptop battery for instance should give you a couple of hours use – slightly less if running intensive programmes, games or DVD’s. So maybe you would like to use your laptop for longer than that while away from home and a fixed power supply. You won’t manage it if your battery is not in top condition.

You can get HP batteries in different capacities. The greater the capacity, the more expensive it will be, but the longer it should last. A high quality battery from a decent supplier will provide superior performance while poor quality products will not only last for shorter periods, they are also likely to deteriorate more quickly as well, compounding the weakness. A good charger should be able to withstand frequent charging and usage.

The right laptop battery is therefore vital. If you’re spending a bit of money on one, you want to make the right selection because on top of it being a waste of money, the wrong choice will also leave you reliant on having a power socket accessible, which isn’t really the point of having a laptop.
